Fantastic Palace - Early Recordings LP

by Eric Mast in

Back in 1992 I discovered FANTASTIC PALACE on a compilation on a short lived label called See Eye and have been listening to and loving it ever since. About ten years later I became friends with music writer and label guy, Mike McGonigal, and discovered he was responsible for the See Eye label. I told him what a fan I was of the music and he tracked down the band for me, which it turns out was the solo recording project of Alexander Ross (all other members it turns out were fictitious), a visual artist who had been living in New York City ever since. I was very excited to learn that an all time favorite band had even more unreleased material, so we decided to give the band its first proper vinyl issue/re-issue, which is what we have done!

Here we pair two early and very limited cassette releases of unexplainable instrumentals by FANTASTIC PALACE. It is utterly unique, and wonderful music! Sounding like good times in a Chrome universe, Wümme era Faust as a circus band, or Super Roots 6 era Boredomes trying to do covers of Byrds outtakes. Songs alternate between sunshine psychedelia and dark alien soundtracks. Even though songs are often short and experimental in nature, rather than sounding like sketches they create fully formed melodic vignettes that feel as if they've been beamed in from a neighboring dimension.

This stuff’s never been on vinyl before (though a later tape release by Ross, ‘Grandfather Paradox,’ garnered much acclaim when reissued last year). This is a joint release with Audio Dregs and Social Music. First pressing of 200 copies.

E*Rock - The Great Underground Empire

by Eric Mast in

New E*Rock album available now! Cassette via Gnar Tapes. The Great Underground Empire is a conceptual synth album based off an early text adventure game developed in 1979 that I played as a kid on my family's PC throughout the early 80's. It was an exploration of "the ruins of an ancient empire lying far underground" with no music or graphics, just glowing text on a black screen. The music serves as a virtual soundtrack performed almost exclusively on my old Prophet 600 and Juno 60 synthesizers which were released about the same time that I was learning to type in order to wander said dungeons.
